■A total of 27 boxes of clothing, donated by area residents in response to appeals in the Gazette, is being shipped to Peru to aid victims of the massive earthquake that devastated large areas of the South American nation in June. Area residents also donated in excess of $400 to the Peruvian Relief which has been sent to relief officials.

■The Northampton Recreation Department closed its playground program today with a “Climax Day.” This is an annual finale held at the Academy of Music. Featured at this event were playground movies which have been taken at the various playgrounds over the summer.

■A committee searching for a new tax collector has whittled down a list of 20 to 30 applicants to about a half dozen who will be interviewed next week. While the search for Tax Collector Richard Newman’s successor is moving along, an interim tax collector probably will have to be named.

■Ten years after it was started by two parents on South Street comparing notes on their 3-year-old sons, the Northampton Parents Center is growing up. In a bid to gain more financial stability, the nonprofit center has formed a new affiliation with Cooley Dickinson Hospital.

■Northwestern District Attorney candidate Dave Sullivan is riding a wave of support from 40 former prosecutors. In a joint statement issued Thursday, the former prosecutors said Sullivan “is extraordinarily well qualified to serve as district attorney and represents the best choice for the citizens of the Northwestern District.”

■Firefighters say a motorist on his way to get his car repaired Friday afternoon barely made it into the parking lot of a local repair shop before it burst into flames. Deputy Fire Chief Steven Vanasse said firefighters responded to a report shortly after 1 p.m. that a car had coasted into the front parking lot of Pro Lube on Pleasant Street and the hood was already smoking heavily.
