50 Years Ago

■Construction is well underway for the new Northampton Nursing Home, going up on Bridge Road. The foundation is partially laid and earth moving equipment is busy at work.

■Paul M. Garvey of 10 West St. has been named director of food services at Smith College. A native of Northampton, he attended St. Michael’s High School and was graduated with an associate degree in food management from the Stockbridge School, University of Massachusetts in 1961.

25 Years Ago

■Members of the University of Massachusetts crew team will walk out onto local waters in more style this fall, once new docks are installed in the shadow of the Coolidge Bridge. An entirely new system of docks is being installed this week on the Connecticut River on land managed by the state Department of Environmental Protection.

■The Northampton Lesbian Festival beings today, bringing lesbians to the city for music performances, workshops, crafts and other entertainment, in venues scattered around the downtown. This year marks the sixth festival produced by Aliza Ansell and Diane Morgan through their company WOW Productions.

10 Years Ago

■Gov. Deval Patrick said Tuesday he may not get to sign a casino bill this year because of disagreement over whether to allow slot machines at racetracks. The governor said the differences between himself and House Speaker Robert DeLeo on slots may be too great to overcome.

■An adoptive and foster community hailed as forward-thinking and innovative when first pitched to the city of Easthampton six years ago is about to get bigger. Construction on the first of 29 planned new residential buildings, at Treehouse at Easthampton Meadow is poised to begin this summer.
