■Russell A. Bishop, president of United Elastic Co., announced yesterday that the company’s Glendale plant would be closed “in the near future,” and said today that a quota on imports “certainly would have improved the business.” The closing of the plant, which includes the weave department, hose supporter department and dye house, involves about 300 employees.

■After 32 years of service as Hampshire County Commissioner, Hiram H. Brownell was honored at a testimonial retirement dinner at the Bluebonnet Diner last night, attended by more than 100. The gathering included department heads, Hampshire County state officials and friends of the retiring commissioner.

■An Easthampton institution is ending. Cottage Pharmacy, 108 Cottage St., where customers buy their morning coffee for 25 cents, will close in 10 days when Brooks Pharmacy buys its prescription list and inventory.

■The JavaNet Café at 241 Main St., Northampton, officially opened for business today. JavaNet is one of a growing number of cybercafes to open nationally. It is the Pioneer Valley’s first. A cybercafe is a traditional gourmet coffee shop but one that also has computers so that patrons can peruse the Internet, the so-called information superhighway.

■An in-house team with one staff member as the designated point person is expected to lead the Jones Library system at least through next June. Library trustees have determined that the best way to handle operations when director Bonnie Isman retires Dec. 10 is to use a team approach.

■The announcement this week by the two Pioneer Valley Democratic congressmen that each will seek re-election in 2012 boosts the chance of western Massachusetts retaining two seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, political observers say. U.S. Reps. John Olver and Richard Neal both announced their plans to seek re-election.
