■Buckets on display at 23 churches, stores, hotels and banks in the greater Northampton area contain packages of 20 smiling angel Christmas cards on sale for the benefit of the Children’s Fund at The Clarke School for the Deaf. The Children’s Fund is used to defray emergency expenses when families are unable to meet them.

■Donald Madsen was elected last night to serve as one of Southampton’s selectmen, filling out the unexpired term of Albert L. Kendrick Jr., who had resigned earlier. Madsen, a former Republican state representative from the Hampshire District, defeated Alex Muir for the post.

■America Online, the country’s largest computer service, is revoking its ban on the word “breast” after complaints from breast cancer patients, who use the service to share information and support. American Online said it was trying to clean up the service when it banned use of the word last week.

■Leslie Laurie, the executive director of the Family Planning Council of Western Massachusetts, has been invited to the White House for a conference on HIV and AIDS next Wednesday. In a letter that Laurie received, President Bill Clinton wrote, “Through this conference, I believe we can raise public awareness about HIV and AIDS and strengthen our national response.”

■Hadley may work with a for-profit company to create a virtual school allowing students from all over Massachusetts to log on to a computer instead of stepping aboard a school bus. The timetable calls for the Hadley Virtual Innovation School to open next fall.

■With the generosity of a local auto dealer and the elbow grease of a dozen off-duty officers, all seven of Easthampton’s marked police cruisers will soon have a snazzy new look. Police Chief Bruce McMahon said the black and white designs, which will replace the blue, red and white schemes in use for years, look “really sharp” and will be a boost for police morale.
