■William Lamprey, chairman of the Christmas Lighting and Decorations Committee of the Downtown Merchants Association of the Greater Northampton Chamber of Commerce, today announced the Christmas lighting program for 1970. A giant snowman is among the new decorations to be used in the city this coming Christmas season.

■The Rev. Stephen S. Kaminski has been appointed as pastor of the St. Valentine’s Polish National Catholic Church of Northampton. He assumed his duties today. Father Kaminski is a cousin to the late pastor, the Rev. Francis H. Kaminski who, after serving the parish for over 26 years, died in June.

■The Shallcross Creativity Institute has opened, offering courses on aspects of creativity, critical and creative thinking, creative processes, creative problem-solving, and creative arts therapies. Based in Haydenville, the institute also offers customized on-site training for businesses and other organizations.

■Northwestern District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel has been elected president of the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association for the 1995-96 term. Scheibel, a South Hadley resident, is the only female district attorney in the state.

■As a concert promoting responsible ways for college students to have a good time was wrapping up at one end of the University of Massachusetts campus last weekend, musicians at a Mullins Center concert were urging students to take their partying to the streets, possibly sparking the violent crowds police encountered later.

■Michael Cahillane is back on the job as an assistant Northwestern district attorney. Outgoing District Attorney Elizabeth Scheibel brought Cahillane back as one of her top prosecutors Monday. Cahillane, 40, had a 10-year tenure in her office until June, when he resigned to campaign for Scheibel’s seat.
