■Robert A. Young was appointed principal of the Vernon Street School last night. He will replace Katherine M. Finn who is retiring after 40 years of teaching and counseling in the Northampton schools. James K. McDonald will assume the role of Principal at the D.A. Sullivan and South St. Schools.

■Ceremonies yesterday in Westhampton marked the rededication of the Westhampton Congregational Church. Many residents of the town attended the ceremonies at the church and the Sunday morning worship services.

■Northampton High School Principal Gordon L. Noseworthy is one of three finalists to become assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Stoughton public schools. Noseworthy, who has been principal in Northampton since 1981, confirmed today he has applied for the position.

■Following a long-standing city policy, the cost of beach passes at the David B. Musante Jr. Beach have been cut in half for the rest of the season. Ray Ellerbrook, director of the Recreation Department, said today the price reduction follows Recreation Commission policy of lowering season passes at mid-point.

■Massachusetts House and Senate leaders agreed Friday on a bill to legalize the most sweeping expansion of gambling in the state in four decades. The bill would authorize three casinos and two slot machine parlors, the latter of which would be competitively bid upon by the state’s four racetrack owners.

■Nearly 100 people on both sides of the biomass issue showed up this week to help the state revise its policy on wood-burning plants. The policy will address whether and to what extent the state should allow or even encourage with tax breaks wood-burning electricity generators and heating plants.
