■Mayor Sean M. Dunphy and two members of the City council Finance Committee, Robert R. Patenaude and John J. Rockett Jr., slashed the city budget to $8.4 million in a nine-hour session yesterday. The city budget as it now stands still represents an increase of $481,964 over last year’s $7,945,142.12 budget.

■Anne Morrow Lindbergh, conservationist and author of “Earth Shine,” will speak at Smith College on Friday. She will speak on “Earth Values” in John M. Greene Hall. The assembly is part of a two-day program at the college on local and national aspects of environmental pollution.

■The second highest administrator at Amherst College has announced he will be stepping down to return to teaching. Ronald Carlisle Rosbottom’s resignation as dean of faculty is a “big deal” on campus, the college’s president says, because the position is such an important one - essentially the equivalent of a provost, or the second-in-command.

■After a rash of bomb threats and one actual bombing on school grounds, it was a quiet city neighborhood that was disturbed Saturday night, when an explosive device made of glass went off on Landy Avenue in Florence, knocking out a window and embedding shards in the vinyl siding of a nearby home. Police are investigating the explosion.

An Easthampton car dealer has filed suit against the Planning Board over its approval of a Stop & Shop across the street from the dealership. Cernak Buick’s attorney, Mark Tanner, argues that the board’s decision to issue a special permit to the grocery retailer “exceeds its authority, is arbitrary and capricious, and or rests on legally untenable ground.”

■A decades-old tradition and slice of Americana in Easthampton will be noticeably absent this summer. The Kiwanis Club confirmed Thursday that members had voted not to host their annual Independence Day fireworks display in July due to increasing costs.
