■The Gazette Girls went down to defeat at the hands of their archrivals, the Orange Devils, in a New England Women’s League contest at Smith’s School yesterday afternoon. The Devils used real clutch playing to subdue the Newsies in the final seconds of the game by a score of 46-45.

■The Northampton School Committee voted last night to cut the 1970 school budget by another $15,000 after recently elected Committeeman Edward J. McMahon proposed “a last-ditch effort at economy.” At a special meeting last week an initial $30,000 was cut from a budget of $3,335,606.

25 Years Ago

■Organizers of a proposed charter school for Amherst say they hope to open next fall with a teaching philosophy that stresses diversity, self-motivation and participatory decision-making. Proponents of the new school have been meeting over the last two months and plan to file an application with the state next week.

■About a dozen people urged members of the Planning Board last night to make downtown streets friendlier for pedestrian use. The board focused on transportation at the third of six planned public meetings, held to discuss aspects of a downtown plan now being shaped by planners.

■Negotiations are continuing between Stop & Shop and a disenchanted employee union that maintains the profitable company is “pleading poverty” by offering a contract devoid of raises for the next three years. Meanwhile, a company representative vows that “a positive conclusion” will be reached by the time the current contract expires next week.

■The governors of Massachusetts and New Hampshire are calling for investigation into tritium leaks at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant, and a growing number of environmental groups and Vermont legislators are calling for the Vernon, Vt., reactor to be shut down. Tritium levels are soaring in monitoring wells around the plant near the three-state border.
