Northampton Community Rowing competes in regattas

On Sept. 7, Northampton Community Rowing youth boats raced in their first regatta of the fall season at the ninth annual Rockrimmon Regatta hosted by the Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club in Springfield. The boys A boat placed first (21:22.1) and the B boat placed second out of a total of five boats in their Men’s Junior 4 race against Holyoke Rowing, Pioneer Valley Riverfront Club and Lenox Memorial. The girls varsity A, B and C boats came in fourth, fifth and sixth place out of a total of nine boats in the Women’s Junior 4 event against Connecticut Boating Club and Lenox Memorial.

The second regatta of the season, the Head of the Hudson, took place at the Albany Rowing Center on Sunday, Sept. 22. The novice girls won (12:39.74) the Women’s Junior Novice 4+ Final against Lenox Crew, Emma Willard, Hudson River and Medford. The boys A boat took second place (10:44.78) in the Men’s Junior 4+ Final against Hudson River, Erie Canal, Cortlandt Community Rowing, Medford and Shaker. The girls A boat took third place (11:55.37) in the Women’s Junior 4+ Final against Erie Canal, Emma Willard, Albany Rowing Club, Shaker and Hudson River.

While the youth team was at the Head of the Hudson, the masters competitive team (adults) raced at the CRI Fall Classic Regatta on the Charles River on Sept. 21. One eight placed sixth out of 14 boats, raced by Stephen Rondthaler (coxswain), Amy Rhodes, Sally Linowski, Cynthia Martini, Gloria DiFulvio, Wendy Mardas, Rose Ganim, Wendy Bernstein and Elaine Fronhofer. NCR’s second eight placed 13th out of 14 boats, raced by Nora Blake (coxswain), Ren Wiscons, Melissa Celli, Hannah Kernizan, Joeli Hettler, Margaret Christie, Brenda Payette, Leah LaBarre and Bernadette Harrigan. NCR’s four made up of Rondthaler (coxswain), Rhodes, Harrigan, Martini and Kris Elinevsky placed third out of 12 boats, and NCR’s four made up of Blake (coxswain), Wiscons, DiFulvio, Jane Kent and Mardas placed 11th.
