Local baseball/softball: Northampton Post 28 erupts for first win

The bats exploded for Northampton Post 28 and Liam Pitrat tossed a four-hitter in a 13-2 six-inning American Legion victory over East Springfield Post 420, Monday at Forest Park.

Pitrat struck out four and walked none. He allowed three of the four hits during a two-run second as Post 420 cut a deficit to 4-2. Pitrat threw 67 pitches and faced only 22 hitters. He had four 1-2-3 innings.

Nick Heafey finished 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs for Post 28 (1-4), which collected 16 hits.

Bennett Kelly (hit, run), Nate Kelley (hit, run) and Noah Brink (hit) each had a pair of RBIs.

Jackson Health (two runs), Andy Grygorcewicz (RBI) and Matt Bouley (two runs) each had two hits. Devontay Edmonds (hit) scored twice.

Greenfield Post 81 5, Aldenville Post 337 0 — Joel Peabody struck out six in the complete-game shutout for Post 81 (3-1).

Garrett DeForest had two hits and an RBI. Owen Phelps had a two-run single. Connor Waitkus and Hunter Campbell each doubled and scored.

Northampton 11, Mohawk 1 — Caleb Steiniger struck out six, walked none and allowed three hits in a complete-game for Northampton in Sandy Koufax action in Buckland.

Steiniger was also 2-for-3 (double) with three runs and two RBIs.

Dillon Moggio was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Jack Kelleher-Mochak was 2-for-4 (double) with two runs and an RBI.

Amherst 11, Westfield 8 — Braeden Tudryn (double) had three hits, scored twice and added two RBIs as the Amherst Mickey Mantle team rolled at home.

Cole Boisvert (four RBIs) and Evan Dooley (two RBIs) each had a double, single and two runs. Quentin Moliterno (run) had three singles and two RBIs.

Chris Mushenski struck out two, walked two and allowed three hits over 4⅓ innings for the win.

Westfield Bank 10, Teddy Bear Pools 6 — Brad Bean was 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored, but Teddy Bear Pools fell in Tri-County League action in South Deerfield.

Zac Britton took the loss for the Poolmen (3-4-1), striking out six in four innings.

Hector DeJesus had two hits and scored a run, Will O’Connor was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and Shy Torres was 2-for-3 with four stolen bases and a run scored for Teddy Bear.


Southampton 7, Frontier Red 6 — Southampton scored in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with the 12-and-under Suburban League victory at Parker Field.

Frontier (1-2) tied the game with two runs in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead with a run in the sixth. Southampton (2-1) led 6-5 after the sixth.

Ashley Taylor doubled and scored for Frontier. She also pitched four innings in relief, struck out seven and allowed four hits.

Mel Ring (RBI) singled and scored twice, while Abby Hernandez (single) and Lily Ellia each had one RBI in defeat.


Joey Wielgus was misidentified in a photo that ran in the Gazette on Saturday. Wielgus was batting for the Easthampton Little League 10-12 team against Southampton in a District 2 Tournament pool play game.
