Local baseball: Frontier Mickey Mantle takes down Hatfield

Gehrig Brynda went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Maxwell Edwards struck out four over seven innings as Frontier beat Hatfield, 6-1, in Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Mickey Mantle action, Sunday at Herlihy Park in Whately.

Ethan Russell (double), Tyler Baranoski, Tynan Creagh and Edwards each had one hit and one RBI.

Kyle Barnes (triple), Ben Martino, Kevin Baumann and Dylan Martin each had one hit.

Wyatt Jeffress, Pat Fitzgibbons and Ryan Belina had singles for Hatfield. Will Dobson took the loss on the month.

Hatfield 6, Smith Academy 3 — Griffin Smiarowski struck out four and allowed three runs on six hits to lead Hatfield in Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Mickey Mantle action, Friday at Smith Academy.

Smiarowski cleared the bases with a double to left-center field in the second inning as Hatfield (5-2) broke the game open.

Smiarowski had two doubles and three RBIs. Dobson had two hits, while Ryan Belina and Aiden Pedersen each had one hit.

Marshall Ingram allowed five runs on six hits over six innings in defeat.

Northampton 7, Wilbraham 1 — The Arcanums scored three runs in the fourth and four runs in the sixth to back Jake Brittain’s two-hitter in Western Mass. Summer Baseball League action, Saturday at Arcanum Field in Florence.

Brittain struck out four, walked four and allowed one run over six innings. Both hits came in the second innings. He allowed an infield single to Jack Kennedy leading off the frame. Anthony Grasso later plated Kennedy with a single.

Pat Serio worked around a walk with two strikeouts in the seventh inning for Northampton (4-3-1).

Brittain added two hits of his own and a run scored. Noah Brink (run), Serio (RBI, run), Max Callan (RBI, run) and Erik Vandergrift (run) each had a hit.

Jackson Heath had an RBI and Luke Guida scored a run.

East Longmeadow 3, Northampton 1 — Brittain went 3-for-3 with three stolen bases, while Colin Ferrara was 2-for-2 for the Arcanums on Thursday.

Softball

The Valley Storm softball club will hold tryouts for the 2020/2021 season next month.

Team eligibility is based on a player’s age as of Dec. 31, 2020. All tryouts will be held at Murphy Park in Greenfield.

12U tryout dates: Aug. 11, 13, 18 and 20 – 6-8 p.m.

14U tryout dates: Aug. 11, 13, 18 and 20 – 6-8 p.m.

16U tryout dates: Aug. 2 from 5-7 p.m. and Aug. 5 from 6-8 p.m.

18U tryout dates: Aug. 4 from 5:30-7 p.m. and Aug. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m.

Pre-registration is appreciated, so tryouts can be properly planned and distanced based on the number of players attending. Please send an email with name, date of birth, age division trying out for, primary position(s) and brief softball history to valleystormsoftballinc@gmail.com.

The team is also still taking applications for a 12U head coach.

Correction

Amherst Regional senior and Gazette Girls Indoor Track & Field Player of the Year Isabela Shepard will be attending Boston University this fall. The name of the school was incorrectly reported in Thursday’s Gazette.
