NORTHAMPTON — After being shut down last summer because of the pandemic, live music is returning to downtown Northampton beginning in July.

The Northampton Summer Park Series, produced by the city’s Arts Council, will feature six performances in Pulaski Park between July and early September, featuring eight different artists in four concerts, as well as two “Salsa in the Park” dance classes with a live salsa band and a DJ.

All shows are free and run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

It’s the sixth year the Arts Council has presented concerts in Pulaski Park, as part of a tradition that has seen live music staged at the park dating back to the 1970s, in shows produced by different organizations.

The series opens this year on Friday, July 9 with Cloudbelly, the acoustic/electric duo of guitarist Anand Nayak and singer-songwriter Corey Laitman, who will also be playing at the Green River Festival in Greenfield in late August. Also appearing July 9 is singer-songwriter Lisa Bastoni, who’s drawn comparisons to Lori McKenna; Bastoni is supported by multi-instrumentalist Sean Staples.

On July 16, singer-songwriters Jake Manzi and Izzy Heltai get their turn. Manzi recently put out his debut album, “Whatever My Heart Allows,” and Heltai released his debut disc, “Father,” last year; according to his website, Heltai has added to his folksinger beginnings with a sound that now embraces pop, indie, and classic rock.

Shows on July 23 and August 3 will bring a mix of rock and punk/metal from local bands Editrix and Thee Acadians, respectively, as well as performances from hammered dulcimer player Max ZT and Grammy-nominated Indian singer Priya Darshini, both from Brooklyn, New York. They were both part of First Night Northampton last December 31.

The Summer Park Series wraps up August 6 and September 4 with salsa dancing sessions led by the band KomboLoko (Aug. 6) and DJ Bongohead (Sept. 4).

No pop-up tents or chairs with legs are permitted on the grass at Pulaski Park. For more information on the series, contact arts@northamptonma.gov or call (413) 587-1069.
