‘Our Bodies Our Justice’ rally in Springfield

For 100 years, Planned Parenthood has provided sexual health education, advocacy and health care, fundamentally changing the way we are now able to speak about sex and sexuality to our partners, our kids and our health care providers.

I worked at Planned Parenthood in Boston in the 1990s. On a daily basis, patients crossed picket lines regardless of the services they were seeking.

And one day the unthinkable happened. A man walked in to our waiting room with a gun. I worked as the manager of counseling at the Boston clinic when the fatal shootings of December 1994 occurred – a devastating event for the clinic, our patients and our community. But Planned Parenthood stayed true to its mission to “protect and promote sexual and reproductive health and freedom of choice,” and we kept our doors open.

I am writing to urge the community to take part in an important show of support to maintain critical health care resources serving Springfield and all of western Massachusetts. Please join us at a reproductive justice rally on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at Springfield City Hall.

This rally is not a single-issue event; it is focused on state and federal legislation impacting health care through racial, gender, economic and social justice lenses.

The fight for women’s autonomy and control over reproductive decisions and health care has a direct impact on the educational, social and economic status of women and their children right here in our communities. Now is the time to fight. There is so much to lose.

Please join me at “Our Bodies Our Justice” rally where community leaders, artists and advocates will come together to take a stand. Let’s keep the doors open. Learn more at ourbodiesourjustice.wordpress.com/.
