LEVERETT — In honor of Earth Day, the Leverett Community Builders Committee is spearheading a community-wide cleanup on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.

The event, which has a rain date of Sunday, is co-sponsored by the town Energy Committee as well as the Leverett Elementary School and its Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).

According to a news release from Energy Committee member Peggy Wolff, Leverett Community Builders emerged out of a desire for more community-wide events that are of interest to all ages. The group strives to create welcoming, fun and engaging activities to encourage interaction and counteract isolation.

Stacey Lennard, a member of the Leverett Community Builders Committee, also happens to be events organizer and Source to Sea Cleanup coordinator for Connecticut River Conservancy in Greenfield, providing her with a lot of experience organizing large cleanup efforts every fall.

“It’s important to realize that trash picked up from streets and streams prevents that trash from making its way into our oceans,” Lennard said in a statement. “I’m excited to be working with my neighbors on this effort close to home.”

The town Highway Department has offered to pick up any bags of trash or recyclables left on the side of the road the following Monday, if participants are unable to bring the bags to the Transfer Station. The Select Board and Transfer Station are waiving fees that weekend for trash from the cleanup effort, according to organizers.

Residents are asked to sign up online at bit.ly/3fw4HzS. Participants are also advised to use an app, Clean Swell, to document the trash they have found, and contribute to a global database that is used to identify trends and advocate for trash-free solutions. Questions about the event can be sent to LeverettCommunityBuilders@gmail.com.
