On Jan. 20, 300 people braved a very cold morning to listen to 25 organizations asking for volunteers for their social and political efforts. Bombyx Center For the Arts and Equity hosted the event, organized by the Rev. Marisa Egerstrom, the dynamic pastor of Florence Congregational Church.
Our communities were well represented: from groups caring for our environment, preserving our local abolitionist history, building affordable homes, and supporting aging neighbors and trans and threatened immigrants, sharing our dedication to peace, justice and standing up for one another marked the morning with what makes life here so remarkable.
Donuts and coffee helped with the chill, as we broadened our networks through conversation. Events for social justice were available throughout the day, ending with a community sing at historic First Churches at 7 p.m. Again, the house was full, as we joined with singers from across the county of all faiths to reaffirm our commitment to the principles that we have embraced from the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.: Bringing people together to turn ideas into impact. Our dedication to standing up in these challenging times was evident as we ended the day in song.
