I read the article in the Nov. 7 Gazette, “Veterans being honored around county.” I won’t get into the larger issue of honoring veterans daily for the sacrifices they made for all of us. I do, however, want to comment on the many meals for which veterans are expected to pay to attend.

I understand food is not free. In spite of that reality, I would note that there were several meals being provided at no cost to veterans. I think the providers of the meals who charged this Veterans Day should do fundraising in the future so that veterans and their guests are truly honored with a free meal. Perhaps an article, “Help needed to honor veterans around county” could be published around the first of September with requests for donations from each of the providers, making it clear the goal is to actually honor veterans by providing a free meal. Maybe a follow-up article in October if donations haven’t been sufficient to meet the need. Or start now so the funds are there next year. Whatever works.

I appreciate the effort of the meals, but really believe those honored should not have to pay.
