I appreciated the reference to birth centers in the recent Gazette front-page article “Maternal health bill nears finish line,” (Aug. 16). It addressed rate parity which is one critical barrier for existing and upcoming birth centers. The centers provide a vital alternative to hospital-based births and, here in the forward-leaning state of Massachusetts, it is important to see many more of them.

I imagine our regional legislators (Jo Comerford, Lindsey Sabadosa, Mindy Domb and Natalie Blais), are up to speed with the birth center movement as they have been involved with every progressive form of legislation since being elected (we are fortunate to have them represent us). Still, it would be helpful to send them a note about how important this issue is to you.

Lastly, I would welcome a Gazette article, or guest columnist who could detail the important role birth centers play in our health care system.
