We at Hampshire Support Alliance (formerly Friends of Hampshire County Homeless Individuals) were happy to see the Gazette’s extensive reporting on Independent Housing Solutions, housing people who don’t always fit into traditional housing options. It’s an important program, and that’s why we have provided extensive support to Dr. Jessica Bossie’s creation of this unique housing.
Hampshire Support Alliance has granted $150,000 in financial support; helped IHS obtain two other grants; provided the furnishings and appliances; and bought food and supplies on an ongoing basis, with the help of volunteers. Our financial support is well over $200,000 and continuing.
Our collaboration with Independent Housing Solutions is one example of why we changed our name. Our work increasingly involves partnerships with other nonprofits, with businesses, civic organizations, the city, and many concerned individuals — the whole “village.”
We’re all in this together! Multiple studies show that programs like this not only enable residents to gain stable housing, but also save money for communities. The reduction in emergency room visits alone is a game changer. We urge the community at large to join us in supporting this exciting new housing option.
