The recognition of the late Martha Spiegelman’s many contributions to human rights was well deserved (“Human Rights Day honors late leader Spiegelman,” Gazette, Dec. 2). I participated in this well-attended event organized by the local chapter of Amnesty International in her memory in Amherst on Dec. 9.
I had known Martha for over 10 years and have long admired her work for peace and for continuing early American political philosopher Thomas Paine’s legacy of doing good for the common person. She followed Paine’s ideals as exemplified in his statement, “My country is the world and my religion is to do good.”
Martha Spiegelman was a brilliant woman with fighting energy, and a strong advocate for democracy, equality, and justice. Her life shows how one special person can make a difference in creating a better society. We all could benefit from following in her lead. She will be long remembered.
