In my daily challenge to try to be positive, it frustrates me to spend time and energy to rebut a Gazette opinion column. I hate doing it but feel compelled to respond to what I see “as the real threat ” to our democratic republic.

The guest column “Political humor that harms” (Nov. 18) feels that no political cartoon should ever be pointed at Biden or the Democrats. The writer’s very myopic and prejudiced belief that (only) Democrats are trying to do the right things for American families, while Republicans are out to undermine everything democratic is of course extreme, hypocritical and dramatic hyperbole.

The “danger” to our republic is (exactly that opinion ) a “cancel culture” of civil discourse. The justification of this is that nothing from Republicans can be considered “civil,” therefore it is dangerous and unacceptable! All on the right are so egregious that satire or vitriol is warranted, but all on the left are above repudiation. How narrow-minded must we be to actually believe that.

There are good and bad people on all sides. I am always reminded of our stated acceptance of tolerance to all, a reason why many come to live here yet clearly this writer’s impassioned belief speaks of intolerance, even our own mayor was recently quoted as calling all MAGA supporter’s racist hatemongers. Really? Isn’t such a generic belief itself rigid and potentially hateful? Is there any hope for us when civil discourse is dead?

Oh Paula Green, where are you when we need you. I lament our loss every day. She was the only person on the left to ever reach out to me, to continue dialogue. The assumption is that most of our valley readers lean left and with that majority opinion no other should be tolerated! I would posit this is incorrect, but supported by their more vocal side. Points of view leaning right are consistently vilified, so too will my letter be! Though left opinions less so.

Most conservatives/independents that I personally know are less inclined to write. Perhaps it is for this very reason. Just as well the Gazette is scolded that they are complicit in fomenting bigotry and hate, and threatened with cancellation if they print outside of these lines. Shouldn’t the news media’s main purpose be to report and inform, and at least try to remain blind of ideological slant?

It seems that out of roughly 300 daily cartoons the Gazette prints throughout a year, maybe 20 point left. That said, it seems to anger “the vocal left” each and every time, but all that point right are justified and should just be accepted sadly so.

We need to examine “the man in the mirror” more often than not. I once heard a saying that I think to be profoundly true: When you point a finger at others, there are three more pointing back at you.

We will all be kinder, if we can remember this.
