Tracey Putnam Culver: Supports council candidates for their ‘thoughtful consideration’

I was motivated to write after reading the letter from Janel Jorda (“Choice for Ward 1 councilor is clear,” Oct. 5). I, too, support Stan Moulton for Ward 1, who will offer some degree of moderation and thoughtful consideration to our council.

I also support at-large contenders David Murphy and Michael Quinlan, for some of the same reasons. Rachel Maiore, the only councilor who voted against the mayor’s budget, wants to see “a bloc of progressives” on the council (Gazette, Sept. 15.) Before you go to the polls, please do your research. David Kris is running for Ward 3 councilor. He has said he sees a need for divestment from the Northampton Police Department. Jesse Hassinger, who is running for Ward 4 councilor, also supports Northampton Abolition Now, as does at-large contender Jamila Gore.

If you don’t remember, NAN members blocked traffic and beat on people’s cars with their fists, hoping to scare councilors into voting against the budget last June. They want the police budget cut by at least 50%. Jorda called their agenda “reckless,” and it is.

Also, remember that our current council members were radical enough to cut the NPD budget by $880,000 during a pandemic! Do we truly need an even more radical council? No, we don’t. Realize, too, that there is discussion underway to remove power from the mayor. Think about what that could mean.

The future of our city depends on your votes. Please consider the need for less radical, more balanced leadership and vote accordingly. Thank you.
