Philip Carter: Life is continuous

In a letter published Feb. 16, Francois Venne states that “[i]t is scientifically correct to say that life begins at conception — few biologists would disagree.” That statement is incorrect.

Biologists recognize that life does not begin. Life is continuous. An unfertilized egg is alive. A sperm is alive. When an egg and a sperm fuse to form a fertilized egg, that also is alive.

There is no point in that process at which life “begins.”
