Michael Seward: Council resolution backing paper’s union a dangerous move

Congratulations to the Northampton City Council for exploiting the opportunity to unapologetically pander to the press. Its resolution supporting the reporters and staff of the Daily Hampshire Gazette will undoubtedly be rewarded in future coverage of the government body at the public’s expense. Reporters who cover the council owe you one.

Between the council’s collusive resolution and the platform the newspaper provides to a state representative and state senator for unscrutinized, regular columns, the line between the Fourth Estate and government is blurred even further, thereby decreasing the value of the newspaper they are trying to save.

The Pioneer Valley NewGuild may view this as a victory in their fight with the newspaper’s owner, but it looks more like a surrender of their role as an independent check on those in power and a forfeiture of the public’s trust.
