Matthew Roth-Katz: Worries about Greenberg’s mayoral bid

It is tempting to ignore the candidacy of Jared Greenberg, who describes himself as a nonpartisan pragmatist and technocrat.

One look at Greenberg’s campaign Facebook page tells me all I need to know about his brand of nonpartisanship — one post ridiculing universal outdoor masking and one post sympathizing with Derek Chauvin, the police officer who murdered George Floyd.

In his April 29 interview with reporter Greta Jochem, aside from explaining all the things we can’t do, such as striving for carbon-neutrality or improving the social safety net, Greenberg makes the claim that city governance should be boring, using the examples of schools and water systems and roads.

I want a mayor who can engage the public and make Northampton an example of a city that can innovate. I worry that a mayor who finds the essential work of running a city to be boring is going to spend all their time opining on Facebook.
