I just read Chief Jody Kasper’s corrections of the Policing Review Commission preliminary report. To me it is irresponsible and inflammatory to release a report that is so negative without even checking the facts.
There was plenty of backpedaling on the part of the commission chair when the inaccuracies were pointed out. He said this is just a “preliminary” report. Too little, too late as far as I’m concerned.
It’s now out in the public domain for citizens to read and believe. In addition to taking a 10% reduction in the budget, the Northampton Police Department is now facing a serious loss of officers to towns and cities where their service will be welcomed. Training new officers will be costly, further straining an already strained budget. Police departments need the funds to train and improve their officers. Inaccurate criticism and cuts are not helpful in these very turbulent times.
The Policing Review Commission should do its job and fact check before releasing its findings.
