Luiz Domeignoz Horta: COVID-19 and our climate

The coronavirus pandemic showed me two main things. First, that we can be very creative finding solutions to our daily routines when facing difficult times. This became clear in my neighborhood when we began working together to offer help during this pandemic.

I was positively impressed when I read Scott Merzbach’s article about Stop & Shop’s announcement that the stores would reserve a special time for elderly people to shop early in the morning. This is a beautiful example of solidarity we should observe more often in our society.

The second aspect this pandemic highlighted for me is the extent to which our planet is interconnected. At first, COVID-19 infected one individual in another continent. Now, the virus has spread to almost every country across seven different continents. This also shows how, as global citizens, everyone is interconnected and shares the responsibilities for the well-being of others and the planet.

Stop & Shop showed they have the capability to take action in a dire situation by allowing elderly people to shop safely, but now I ask them to do the same for the climate crisis.

Cargill is one of the largest American companies, which also provides meat to Stop & Shop. This same company is responsible for demolishing thousands of hectares in the Amazon rainforest. By selling Cargill’s meats, Stop & Shop is sharing responsibility for Cargill’s atrocities.

This pandemic has made it abundantly clear that we are all responsible for the well-being of each other and the planet. So, as a Stop & Shop customer, I request that the company takes action by cutting its contracts with Cargill.

As we all look at the coronavirus pandemic, there still remains another crisis that lays at our feet, one that will not go away if we just turn our heads. Climate change will only increase the spread of diseases, and pandemics will become a common problem if we do not address climate change head on. Citizens and companies need to start acting as a global community, because simply put, this is our reality.
