In October 1999 the United Nations announced that world population hit the 6 billion mark. This November, according to the Pew Research Center and the UN, world population will hit the 8 billion mark. So, in a period of a mere 23 years, world population grew by 2 billion human beings.

Population scientists at the Club of Rome calculated, decades ago, that the carrying capacity of the Earth was about 10 billion. That mark will be met, at the present rate, well before 2100.

Clearly, some major changes are in order for life on earth, as we know it, to continue. Stabilizing world population is no easy task and colonizing Mars, a favorite solution for some, is a pipe dream since it takes about nine months to get there, the average temperature is below zero, there is no air, wind, rain or sound, and no means to grow food. (Otherwise ,its great place to visit, if you have some free time).
