Joseph Blumenthal: ‘Sometimes police are needed’

I’m sure I’m not the only one who noticed the irony in Wednesday’s story about Tuesday’s demonstration in memory of George Floyd, where police had to come and break up a fight that started there.

I think that the Department of Community Care with its mission of dealing with many situations without armed police presence is a great idea. But sometimes police are needed, and I’m glad they were there to stop the fight and prevent its potential escalation into something much worse.

“Defund the Police” is probably one of the worst political slogans ever. While most of its proponents don’t really want to abolish the police, people who hear it can be forgiven for thinking that its proponents are anarchists who don’t care if public order disappears. It’s a short step from there to listening to demagogues who promise tough law enforcement, and maybe even voting for someone like our former president.
