Jonathan Stevens: A future downtown with fewer cars

In response to Saturday’s “Main Street Design” article, I wanted to “second” John Cohen’s vision of a car-free possibility for our town center.

It’s 2021. To propose more lanes of traffic and less sidewalk is regressive. As a local business owner (albeit not on Main) and as an avid cyclist, I’d like to think our future has fewer cars in it. And that our economies have built-in space for humans, unarmored and with more public art and newly-planted trees around them.

Retail commerce will not survive in clinging to the automobile.
