Ellen Koteen and Diane Palladino: Downtown design

Very few of the letters and articles related to an improved Main Street in Northampton address or even acknowledge the needs of seniors and persons with disabilities.

According to the 2020 population estimate for Northampton of 28,451, a full 27% are over 65 years of age or younger than 65 and have a disability. There are an estimated 5,121 people over 65 and 2,532 people younger than 65 who have a disability.

It seems unthinkable to design a downtown which does not give major attention to 7,682 residents.

One of the reasons we have been residents of this town for 31 years is its culture, vibrant downtown, and civic values. However, if downtown becomes less accessible to us, we will be looking to other towns, most likely Easthampton, to shop, dine and attend cultural events. We don’t think we’ll be the only people who do this.
