Elaine Kersten: Happy downtown is back to normal

  • Part of the new configuration of upper Main Street under the Shared Streets and Spaces program is a new open space next to the curb, visually marked by murals on the pavement. Bordering the murals is a bike lane which is buffered by a row of planters from the new parallel parking spaces. Photographed on Aug. 22, 2020.

Whew! What a relief to read about scrapping the Main Street changes. It was a great idea to redesign the street related to COVID business challenges — in theory. But in practice, it failed miserably.

Quick access to local businesses was challenging to such a degree that I totally stopped shopping in the city. The many added street elements (planters, barriers, signage and street taping) made it almost impossible to negotiate driving safely through the pedestrian-heavy area. I’m amazed there weren’t accidents. And the overall visual was chaotic — nothing was integrated or orchestrated with a sense of visual appeal.

Thank you for seeing reason on this, Mr. Mayor. I look forward to shop in the city once the “temporary changes” are eliminated.
