Daniel S. Miller: Solutions go beyond extra security

To prevent episodes such as the monster-scale violation of the U.S. Capitol we saw Jan. 6, we’ll have to do more than ramp up security.

We’ll have to replace our indignation and astonishment with meticulous administration of even-handed justice. Judges must not dole out unduly harsh punishments to right-wingers. If they do, the accused will have a sound reason to believe that the so-called liberal establishment is still out to get them, and we’ll remain in the cycle of finger-pointing and recrimination.

We should not use the criminal justice system to show them who is the boss; there should not have to be a boss. Right-wingers will loathe any administration of justice, but to the extent that they come around and acknowledge, albeit grudgingly, the even-handedness, the country will heal.

In the meantime, we should swear off trillion-dollar tax cuts and use the money to fund education. We should enrich the educational system so that it’s unrecognizable compared to what we have now. With that we could mitigate the ignorance from which President Donald Trump has drawn sustenance.
