Claire Lobdell: Sciarra has the experience

I am supporting Gina-Louise Sciarra for mayor of Northampton because I believe she is the perfect combination of idealist and technocrat. She has displayed her compassionate ethics in her professional career at Pathlight and other social service agencies, as well as the policies she has championed for the past eight years on the City Council, including her work on zoning reform and affordable housing and championing the rights of renters to legal counsel in eviction hearings.

Anyone who has heard Gina-Louise speak about budgets can attest that she has a deep knowledge of the interplay between local and state government, the funding streams and legislation that affect both, and the avenues that Northampton can use to secure funding for various projects. She knows the departments of our city’s government and the individuals who work in those departments.

In Northampton, the mayor chairs the School Committee. As someone with children in our public schools, I want a mayor who values public education as a first choice. Gina-Louise has demonstrated her belief in and commitment to public education by enrolling her children in Northampton public schools since preschool.

We have all recently lived through four years of chaos at the federal level when a person with no political experience was elected to executive office. While none of the other candidates in this race share the politics of that person, I am truly worried about their ability to effectively execute the job of mayor when starting with absolutely no experience in city government.

Gina-Louise has that experience, guided by a strong moral compass. I hope you will join me in voting for Gina-Louise Sciarra on Sept. 28.
