Bonnie Harrison: Water, sewer billings in Easthampton

Easthampton residents, beware, and check your water/sewer bills when you receive them because you may have been overcharged. Why? Because the transponder on your meter may not be working and when they ride around town to read the meter remotely each quarter and if it does not respond they will send you an “estimated” billing, which is usually higher than your usage.

Years ago, when a water meter could not be accessed by coming into your home to read the meter, they would send out a billing that actually read “estimated bill.” Not anymore with the radio transmitter device. If it does not receive the reading via the radio device you may be getting the estimated bill, which in turn can be a higher reading than your actual reading on your water meter. You only know it’s estimated if you ask, it does not indicate that on your bills currently.

If you feel your water/sewer bill is incorrect, I urge you to contact the Water Department and voice your concern. Ask questions about your recent billing if you think it’s an overcharge. Don’t take the water/sewer billing for granted. This happened to my brother and he was overcharged two billings due to an estimated bill because they could not correctly get a remote reading. He had to have a new transponder installed by the Water Department personnel.

Aren’t we already paying enough taxes and fees in town to be overcharged because the transponders haven’t been checked or replaced to get accurate readings?
