Bob Fazzi: It’s called the 413 Takeout Campaign

Nearly everyone in Northampton knows that the COVID-19 crisis has had a devastating impact on one of our communities most cherished members, our restaurants.

In a community with over 100 restaurants that provide an array of eating experiences, they are hurting. Some have closed for the winter. Others — six as of today — have closed for good. All have struggled for survival.

These are the restaurants owned by many of our neighbors. They employ our friends and family. Their taxes help support our schools, city government, the parks and recreation departments and an array of other important services. They provide an incredible range of eating experiences from pizzas to fine dining. Restaurants, along with art and music, are the heart and soul of Northampton — and they are hurting.

That is why I am writing. The plight of our restaurants is a community problem that needs a community answer. All of us who can honestly say that we have benefited and enjoyed any one of our restaurants really need to consider getting involved in an effort to save our restaurants. That opportunity is now available. It’s called the 413 Takeout Campaign.

It is a real campaign, not a marketing strategy. It was developed by the Downtown Northampton Association and the Chamber of Commerce’s Economic Development Committee. By joining the campaign, you agree to purchase one takeout meal or one family meal each week for the next three months from any restaurant in downtown Northampton, Florence or Leeds. It can be breakfast, lunch or dinner. It can be any day of the week. It’s your choice.

And what is the “4” in the 413 Campaign? For those of you who can, we would hope that you would recruit four of your friends or your neighbors to do the same thing you are doing — purchase one meal a week for the next three months. That’s the 413 Takeout Campaign.

To join the campaign, go to Each person registering will be eligible to win one of a number of gift cards that will be awarded each week.

Northampton is a special community. The 413 Takeout Campaign is our community’s effort to support our restaurants, their employees and all of us who share our pride in our restaurants. This may seem like a small effort but together, we can make a major impact.
