50 Years Ago

■Call them Minutemen, please! The University of Massachusetts student body has voted overwhelmingly for the nickname Minutemen for its athletic teams. The student body and the administration agreed to drop the name Redmen after receiving a letter from a lawyer representing a group of American Indians. He said they found the reference to Redmen racist, distasteful and defamatory.

■The Consumer Protection Division of the Attorney General’s Office has started a formal investigation of allegedly defective FHA-financed homes on Austin Circle in Florence. Homeowners have complained about major and minor defects in 15 homes on Austin Circle built in 1971 and 1972.

25 Years Ago

■Amherst police got the busy weekend they were anticipating, making 45 arrests Friday and Saturday — a record for the new academic year so far. Most were related to alcohol and loud parties.

■State House Majority Leaders William P. Nagle Jr., D-Northampton, went to junior high school with teacher Gail Glazier and once was a substitute teacher in her classroom. Glazier, now president of the Northampton Teachers Association, returned the favor Thursday, honoring the lawmaker with the association’s “Friend of Education” award at the organization’s fall reception.

10 Years Ago

■After more than two months of work to overhaul a much used but worn-out room in the basement of the Jones Library, the space reopens to the community next month. A public reception to celebrate the opening of the Woodbury Room will be held on Oct. 9.

■In 2010, there were six fatal motor vehicle accidents in Hampshire County. They all involved either a pedestrian or a motorcycle. Fatal motorcycle accidents have been on the rise for the past decade, according to the National Highway Traffic Data Safety Administration.
