Here’s why I’m voting ‘yes’ on Question 1

Here goes one more letter on Question 1 … but with a twist: Doctors are NOT beside nurses. CEOs are NOT bedside nurses. Nurse administrators who haven’t worked at the bedside in years are NOT bedside nurses.

Thousands of registered BEDSIDE nurses (the people who actually take care of you are all hours of the day and night) in Massachusetts have been trying for over 20 years to get hospitals to pay attention. RN staffing in many hospitals is inadequate and at times dangerous. In over 20 years, the situation has not improved.

Surprise! In 2018, the hospitals band together. They hire consultants. They pool their money and spend millions and millions of dollars to “stop the nurses.” Wow … What if they worked together and did the same thing but used their millions and vast resources and imaginations to recruit, properly train and improve conditions to retain the nurses that work at their bedsides, instead of on scary TV ads? What if they could work together to make ALL hospitals in Massachusetts safe?

Now that we have your attention, please join us Nov. 6 and vote “yes” on 1, and tell the hospitals that you want all hospitals to be safe. Because if we don’t, it will be BUSINESS as usual on Nov. 7!

Linda Burque, Bedside RN for 40 years
