Briefs: Karen Bierwert collects hardware at masters swimming championships

Northampton’s Karen Bierwert collected six medals at the 2019 US Masters Long Course Meters summer swimming championships this month in Mission Viejo, Calif.

Competing in the 65-69 age group, she took second in the 50-meter breaststroke in 45.68 seconds. She also earned silver in the 100 breaststroke (1:40.06), 200 breaststroke (3:38.52) and 200 freestyle (2:53.23).

Bierwert took third in the 200 individual medley (3:16.95) and 100 backstroke (1:32.26).

She also swam on a mixed 200 free relay team representing the New England Masters Club that placed fourth in 1:57.53.

The New England Masters Club took fifth in the Regional Club Division.

Frontier adding youth field hockey team

Girls in Union 38 in the fourth through sixth grade can join a field hockey team that will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays at Frontier at 5:30 p.m. from Sept. 3 through Oct. 24.

The deadline to register is Aug. 30. Games will be against other Hampshire County teams as well as jamborees on the weekends.

Shirts, kilts and socks will be supplied. Shirts must be returned. The club has mouth guards, sticks and shin guards available. Parents must supply spandex shorts and field hockey googles.

The program costs $100 with a $50 equipment deposit.

Valley storm adding 10U team

An additional tryout date has been added to help finalize the Valley Storm 10U roster. It will take place Sunday at Meriett Field at Sunderland Elementary from 2-4 p.m.

Interested players should send an email of interest, including players name, date of birth, played position(s) and school district. PLayers must be 10 or younger as of Dec. 31, 2019 to be eligible.
