Amatul-Wadud’s vote for Scott Brown disappoints

I was so very disappointed to see that Tahirah Amatul-Wadud, a so-called progressive candidate for change. voted for Scott Brown rather than Elizabeth Warren for U.S. Senate in 2012. While I am not always in agreement with former Congressman Barney Frank, I trust him.

As a feminist and social justice/health care advocate, it is clear from Frank’s letter (“Ex-congressman explains support for Richard Neal,” Aug. 13) that Richard Neal represents our district and works on behalf of this country as a progressive Democrat. Perhaps over the years we have not seen enough of him here at home, and I admit I was wondering if he was somehow complacent and part of D.C. more than here. Frank clarified everything for me. Is Neal perfect? Most likely not. Is he good and are his values aligned with mine. Yes.

I want more women — particularly women of color — in elected office, but there is absolutely nothing Amatul-Wadud can say that would convince me it was OK in any way to vote for Brown. As an educated attorney, Amatul-Wadud made an informed choice. Her apology now is irrelevant and self-serving.

It was clear what Warren stood for and what Brown stood for when they ran campaigns. It speaks volumes that Amatul-Wadud proudly voted for someone who wanted to add to the Republican kill of affordable health care, who was anti-LGBT legal rights and who admired Antonin Scalia as a “model” Supreme Court justice. Just how progressive is an attorney who follows along these lines? Answer: not at all.

Thank you, former Congressman Frank, for sharing important data about Congressman Neal and an unfortunate fact about Tahira Amatul-Wadud. The best choice is clear.

By the way, Congressman Neal, visit us in our towns more often. Somehow, Senator Warren manages to do this.
