I support both workers’ rights and action on climate change. So why does the proposed Green New Deal fill me with dismay?

It moves us away from ideas that could enjoy broad support across the political spectrum. The threat of climate change is too urgent to belong to any one party, or to be used for the scoring of political points.

What sort of policy might have a realistic chance of public approval? Everybody likes getting a check from the government. Consider a revenue-neutral carbon tax, with 100 percent of the proceeds returned to U.S. residents in the form of equal per-capita payments.
