Hopkins Academy & Gateway qualify for softball postseason

Two teams qualified for the Division 3 softball postseason Wednesday.

Hopkins Academy returned with a 13-12 win over Putnam for win No. 9, and Gateway beat Sabis 4-1 on the road. for its 10th

Taylor Barry hit a two-run triple for her second career varsity hit and Megan Quinlen went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and an RBI for the Golden Hawks (9-2). Olivia Brighenti and Jessica Markowski both went 2-for-5 with an RBI as well for Hopkins Academy.  

Stephanie Paiva had both of Gateway’s hits in the road win over Sabis. She also scored two runs, including the game-winner in the third inning, for the Gators (10-4).

Hampshire Regional 16, Chicopee Comp 0 (5) — Jocelyn Mettey struck out nine, allowing just two hits and no walks to earn her seventh win.

Kaitlyn Baker (three hits, double) and Kaitlyn Labrie (two hits) each scored three runs and drove in one.

Maggie Rubeck was 2-for-4 and scored three times for Hampshire (11-2, 5-0 Valley Wheel).

Emma Czarnecki singled twice and scored two runs.

Easthampton 12, South Hadley 0 (6 innings) — Chelsea Indyk struck out 12 and allowed just three hits in the Eagles’ victory.

Abigail McClaflin went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored for Easthampton (12-1). Emma Downer and Lauren Morse both drove in a pair of runs as well for the Eagles.

Molly Goshea and Sarah Bisson singled for South Hadley ().

Belchertown 13, Holyoke 2 — Seven Orioles had multiple hits, as the Orioles belted 17 of them in the rout of Holyoke.

Allison Cote was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, the most of seven batters who drove in a run for Belchertown (6-6). Olivia Plate went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Emma LeBlanc was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Frontier Regional 3, Mohawk 1 — Caroline Moreau singled twice and drove in all three runs for the Red Hawks.

Macy Ring tripled, while Skyla Burniske doubled.

Ariana Walker and Lilly Spence singled twice each for Frontier (11-3 7-2 Franklin).

Chloe Cutting picked up the win in her first varsity start, striking one out.

Baseball

Gateway 15, Duggan 0 (5) — Ryan Orr threw a two-hit shutout Tuesday, striking out nine batters with one walk. He also went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and scored a run.

Wyatt Heeter (double) added four hits, four runs and three RBIs.

Brett Bonenfant doubled, scoring four runs and driving in one for the Gators (4-7).

Amherst 8, Minnechaug 6 (10 innings) — J.B. Mills led off the 10th inning with a double to spark the Hurricanes to the win.

Alex Irizarry drew a walk immediately following Mills’ double and Evan Hu drove them both in on a line drive that deflected off the center fielder’s glove and rolled to the wall. Judah Katz threw four scoreless innings on the mound to earn the victory for Amherst (6-6, 3-4 Valley).

Evan Dooley and Eli Kayser-Hirsh both drove in two runs a piece while Justin Masteralexis scored twice.

Belchertown 8, Frontier Regional 7 (8) — Chris Tilton tripled and scored three runs, including the game-winner in extra innings.

Jack Mankowsky had three hits and scored two runs for Belchertown (5-7, 1-5 Hampshire West).

Chris Buffoe (double) and Zach Bohnet added two hits and a run each.

Bryan Baumann tripled, doubled and scored two runs for Frontier (11-3, 5-2).

Corbin Blight had three hits (double) and scored a run. Jacob Bryan singled and scored two runs, an Kyle Barnes had two hits.

Greenfield 9, South Hadley 3 — Sean Doherty singled three times and drove in all three of the Tigers runs.

Nick Cirone had three hits, and Tyler Evans singled for South Hadley (3-9, 2-4 Hampshire West).

Ware 8, Hampshire Regional 1; Ware 6, Hampshire Regional 0 — The Raiders lost both ends of a doubleheader.

Greg Sarna McCarthy drove in a run, whle Matt Quenneveille had two hits, including a double, in Game 1.

Bennett Kelly and Jake Vishaway singled in Game 2 for Hampshire (5-9, 4-5 Bi-County).

Boys lacrosse

Amherst 11, West Springfield 8 — Dominic MacDonald dsitributed five assists for the Hurricanes in a road win.

Will Borell scored four goals. Dimitris Son added a hat trick, while Ty Borrell (two goals, assist) and Pierre Tilus (goal, two assists) each accounted for three points for Amherst (3-8, 3-5 Valley).

Jose Gabriel Gerena found the net once. Connor Bowen saved six shots.

Girls lacrosse

Westfield 17, Granby 7 — Julia Frappier (assist) and Jasmine Rodrigues-Jones scored two goals each for the Rams on Tuesday.

Madison Sexton (assist), Gabby Walz and Emily Vallee also found the net for Granby (10-4, 3-2 Valley). Liberty Conlin made five saves.
