HOLYOKE — The city’s state representative-elect has named her first legislative aide — a new hire, but hardly a new name for Holyokers.

Patricia Duffy announced this week that Ward 6 City Councilor Juan Anderson-Burgos will become her aide when she is sworn in on Jan. 6. Currently herself the legislative aide for state Rep. Aaron Vega, Duffy said that Anderson-Burgos is both a friend and ally.

“He’s also already well-versed in constituent services and public responsibility because he’s my ward city councilor,” Duffy, a Democrat, said in a statement. “And the fact that he’s bilingual reinforces our mission to prioritize outreach all over this city.”

Anderson-Burgos said he still plans to remain on the City Council.

“I love serving as my ward councilor and working with my colleagues there,” he said in an email to the Gazette. “I believe my work with Pat will broaden the level of constituent service I’m able to give my ward and to the city.”

A legislative aide is the only paid staffer that the first-year representatives have. Aides are involved with constituent service and attending events and meetings for lawmakers with full calendars.

In a Democratic primary election, Duffy defeated commercial real estate broker and five-term Ward 3 City Councilor David Bartley, who finished second with 31.5% of the vote, and Patrick Beaudry, the manager of public affairs for the Pioneer Valley Planning Commission, who finished with 27.9% of the vote. She ran unopposed in the general election.
