Downtown, everything’s waiting for you

“We’re so grateful for the amazing level of support from every part of our community for this event,” says Amy Cahillane, executive director of the Downtown Northampton Association, organizers of the city’s first-ever downtown Holiday Stroll: “The city is going all out to make sure this is the best holiday season downtown ever.”

Beginning at 5 p.m. today Main Street, Northampton will be closed to traffic for a community-wide party that runs until 8 p.m. Events, however, will begin even earlier.

3 p.m. — Look for the Smith College Smiffenpoofs performing in multiple locations along Main Street

4 p.m. — Pioneer Valley Ballet presents “The Nutcracker” at the Academy of Music

4-8 p.m. — The Smith College Museum of Art holds its monthly Free Second Friday program for families, with the Smith College Campus School Chorus performing 4:15-4:45

5 p.m. — Sticks & Bricks on Market Street holds a Holiday Trunk Show

5-6:30 p.m. — Look for Sam the Minuteman perambulating on Main Street

5:30 p.m. (or so) — Local Burger holds a burger-eating contest. Compete against others to see how many burgers you can eat in 15 minutes

5:30 p.m. — Local Chorus performs inside the Unitarian Universalist Church

6-7 p.m. — Look for the Smith College Smithereens performing in multiple locations on Main Street

6 p.m. — Turn an ear toward the Smith College hill to hear live playing of the Smith College carillon

6 p.m. — Valley Rock Voices sing in front of the First Churches

6 p.m. — Sacred Harp singing in front of City Hall

​6-7:30 — Live Greek music in front of Filos Greek Taverna

6-8 p.m. — Book launch and First Annual Bad Rap Contest at the Parlor Room (15 and under category; prizes awarded)

6:15 p.m. — Mayor David Narkewicz reads from “The Wind in the Willows” at Broadside Bookshop

6:30 p.m. — A2Z Yo-Yo Team in front of the First Churches

6:30 p.m. — Nota Bene sings inside Silverscape Design

​6:30 p.m. — Pioneer Valley Capella, location TBD

6:30 p.m. – Celtic Heels performance in the street in front of City Hall

7 p.m. — Spirit of the Heart martial arts demonstration in front of City Hall

7 p.m. — Nota Bene inside Thornes

7-10 p.m. — Rise Up and Sing hosts “Hope & Courage Sing-Along” at Northampton Friends Meeting, 43 Center St.

7:30 p.m. – Community carol sing-along with Jonathan Harvey (Pioneer Valley Symphony Chorus) in the Unitarian Universalist Church

7:30p.m. – Pioneer Valley Ballet presents “The Nutcracker” at the Academy of Music

7:40p.m. - Nota Bene at the Hotel Northampton.

On-going:

* Hits 94.3 live DJ playing from the Futureliner bus in the street between Bahn Mi Spot and Dirty Truth

* S’mores and marshmallow roasting over the fire pits on the Rainbow Crosswalk with the Girl Scouts, Captain Candy & Sylvester’s

* Hay Rides with Muddy Brook Farm, picking up in front of Pulaski Park

* Santa and elves hanging out in a tent near Synergy

* Photo Booth, run by Northampton High School’s Tech Department - location TBD

* Face painting in front of Faces

* Elf costume contest, with gift cards awarded to the top three elf costumes seen in Thornes Marketplace during the Stroll

* Fire engine, police cruiser and snow plows for kids to climb in and explore, staffed by Northampton’s Police Department, Fire Department and Department of Public Works, parked near the Calvin and McLadden’s

* Gingerbread house-making with Historic Northampton and Sylvester’s, in front of Memorial Hall

* Carnival games with the Northampton Recreation Department, in front of TD Bank, with free hot chocolate and cookies from Smith College

* Free hot chocolate from Our Family Farms

* Pie Bar

* Sweet Spoken

* 21+ beer garden in the parking lot adjacent to the Toasted Owl

* Vendors in the street

* Look for Northampton Brewery elves wandering the street, handing out candy canes and Brew bucks and doe
