Linda Hillenbrand: VA leadership ignored union’s concerns at Soldiers’ Home

I appreciate the Gazette’s coverage of the problems at the Holyoke Soldiers’ Home. Everything points to one fact — you need adequate staffing in any facility like this.

A nurse cannot give adequate care working a 36-hour shift. And they’ve been sounding the alarm for years. One has to ask why the VA director would discipline the head of the union about wearing a mask and why the VA inspections weren’t recognizing staffing shortages. The anti-union policies start with Superintendent Bennett Walsh and run straight up to the governor’s office and the VA.

If they had paid attention to the union’s concerns, we may not have seen so many deaths.
