High schools: Makayla Tatro, Smith Voc thump Hampden Charter

Makayla Tatro’s 17 points led the Smith Vocational girls basketball team past Hampden Charter, 50-19, on Friday night.

Tatro drilled seven field goals and also hit three free-throws as the Vikings improved to 2-1 on the season.

Nyia-Marie Forbes (six points), Vanessa Antil (six points) and Liliana Malloy (five points) also played well for Smith Voc.

Keilani Cabrera led Hampden Charter with eight points.

Northampton 66, Chicopee 31 — Four different Blue Devils players scored in double figures, led by freshman Emme Calkins’ team-high 15 points as Northampton doubled up Chicopee on Friday night.

Anna Oravec (14), Bri Heafey (11) and Liv Joensen (11) contributed offensively while Makayla Fydenkevez chipped in eight points in the win.

Pittsfield 56, Holyoke 26 — Aliana Almodovar put up a team-high 14 points, but the Purple Knights had no answer for one of the best teams in Division 3. Holyoke scored only two points in the opening quarter.

Kylie Blaha, Evangeline Cauley and Luis Rivera each scored three points in the loss.

Frontier 74, Ludlow 18 — The Redhawk defense continued their dominant start to the season, holding the Lions to 18 points in an independent victory at Goodnow Gymnasium Friday. 

Addie Harrington recorded 21 points, Jazzy Hayes tossed in 16 points while Harper Modestow added 10 points in the victory for Frontier, which improved to 5-0 on the season with the win.

Easthampton 57, Ware 30 — Nola Roos scored 14 points to pace the Eagles, while Samone Young and Piper Collins each tossed in 11 points in the win.

Nine different Easthampton players scored on Friday night, and a 24-point second quarter was plenty to pull away from Ware.

Wahconah 48, Amherst 13 — The ‘Canes managed just a baker’s dozen points in a lopsided loss on the road.

Keira Cunniffe and Neena Chinappa helped score for Amherst’s offense on Friday night.

Boys ice hockey

Amherst 2, Chicopee 2 — Nate Desbien netted a clutch equalizer in the third period to earn the ‘Canes a tie against Chicopee on Thursday night. Desbien’s tally was assisted by Sawyer Ferro.

Eric Chen added a first-period goal for Amherst, with Ferro and Ethan Mooney notching assists.

Boys basketball

Frontier 58, Mahar 49 — Make it three wins to open the season for the Redhawks, who walked away with a Hampshire League South triumph over the Senators at Goodnow Gymnasium Thursday. 

Max Millette scored a game-high 25 points, Garrett Dredge and Alex Ellis each put up 11 points while Rowan Modestow added four points for Frontier, who led 30-22 at the half and 43-35 going into the fourth.
