High schools: Mahoney nets OT winner as Northampton sticks Chicopee

Jay Mahoney scored an overtime game-winner 2 minutes, 28 seconds into the extra period, as the Northampton boys lacrosse team beat Chicopee, 9-8, at home Friday.

Mahoney also tied the game with 3:35 left in regulation and finished with four goals and an assist.

The Blue Devils (1-1) never led at the end of any regulation periods, but kept the game within striking distance until Mahoney took over late.

Connor Tobin and Russ Welch each contributed two goals with Mike McCarthy adding the other.

Meanwhile, Chance Asbornsen added one assist in the game. Jonathan Marshall had nine saves for the Blue Devils in the win.

South Hadley 12, Agawam 5 — Liam Dawson paced the Tigers attack with five goals and one assist accompanied by Ryan Levrault (three goals, one assist) and Shawn Mitchell (two goals, one assist)

Mike Senecal and Hunter Borowski each added one goal while Shawn McEwen assisted on two of the Tigers’ goals. Jacey Rondeau saved six Agawam shots to improve the South Hadley’s record to 2-1.

McCann Tech 12, Granby 7 — Nate Drapeau led the Rams with three goals and two assists. Mitch L’abbee scored two goals with KaydenLaramee (one goal, one assist) capping off the scoring for the Rams (0-3).

Christian Perez recorded the other assist while Nate Loughman had 17 saves in the loss.

Girls lacrosse

Westfield 15, Northampton 5 — Kendyll Wing found the net twice in a road loss. Elly MacDonald, Julienne Lussier and Jett DuVall all scored one goal each. Gabby Adovno stopped eight shots.


Easthampton 9, Palmer 0 — Rachael Robinson threw a one-hit shutout, striking out 16. She allowed one hit and struck out two.

Lauren Morse, Chelsea Indyk and Kristalynn Culver had two hits each. Abby McClaflin and Tessa Pond scored two runs apiece for the Eagles (2-0).


McCann Tech 5, Smith Vocational 3 — Aidan Pike and Andrew Pierce had RBI groundouts, and Dylan Fil singled in a run in the sixth inning for the Vikings.

Tom Doyle went 3-for-4 for Smith Vocational (0-2).

Boys volleyball

Putnam 3, Belchertown 0 — The Orioles lost in straight sets 25-13, 25-18, 25-14.

Nathan Wright had six kills and two aces for the Orioles (0-3) with James Lawless recording four of the team’s other 12 kills plus an ace. Nathan Courchesne and Jacob Bresnahan had one kill apiece while Derek Guntor and Raghav Suryanarayanan each had one ace.
