High schools: Holyoke boys basketball inches closer to postseason

Published: 2/12/2020 10:56:23 PM

The Holyoke boys basketball team defeated Agawam, 79-55, on Wednesday at Holyoke High School.

Jael Cabrera scored 17 points to lead the Purple Knights (9-8), who need one win to qualify for the postseason. Jesus Ibarra chipped in 16 points.

Holyoke went into halftime ahead, 39-27. Cabrera scored 11 points in the first half.

“(Jael) has been consistent this year,” Holyoke coach Juan Maldonado said. “He’s a competitor. You could put Michael Jordan or Lebron James out there and he’ll think he can compete. You have to love that about him.”

Agawam broke through the Purple Knights’ defense and earned trips to the free-throw line in the third quarter and trailed the Purple Knights by eight points late in the frame.

Holyoke made some substitutions and took advantage of trips to the line in the fourth quarter to bounce back and seal the victory.

“We found a nice group that turned it around and came with energy,” Maldonado said.

Smith Academy 54, Mohawk Trail 49 — Nate Moynihan had 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Caden Guimond added 10 points as the Falcons (5-14, 2-5 Hampshire North).

Griffen Smiarowski added nine points and Wyatt Jeffress had eight in the win.

Granby 59, Ware 41 —Brandon Wishart scored 19 points to lead the Rams (9-7, 3-4 Bi-County West), who need one win to qualify for the playoffs. Nate Breault chipped in 16 points for Granby.

The Rams made 11 3s (Wishart 5, Breault 4, Torres Jr, Gaughan).
