High schools: Granby softball sweeps doubleheader vs Ware

The Granby softball team swept a Sunday doubleheader against Ware at home and are now back in the playoff hunt.

Granby won Game 1, 11-5, and Game 2, 11-4 in six innings. The second game was called due to darkness.

The Rams (6-7) need to close the season 4-3 to qualify.

Lindsey Wenzel struck out 14, walked six and allowed 12 hits in 13 innings to win both games for the Rams.

Wenzel was also 5-for-6 with three RBIs and a double.

Kaeleigh Croteau was 3-for-6 with two triples and four RBIs. Julia Gauvin was 3-for-7 with one triple and three RBIs.

Hampshire 11, Monument 1 — Jocelyn Mettey walked one, struck out five and allowed four hits as she improved to 8-1 with the win in Westhampton, Saturday.

Hannah Wodecki (RBI) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double. Hannah Marney was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a triple.

Theresa Saltis doubled and scored for Hampshire (12-3).

Athol 21, Belchertown 5 — Gina Camerota (two runs) and Olivia Plate each went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Orioles (6-7), Saturday. Camerota homered in the first inning.

Sabis 5, Hopkins Academy 4 — Maegan Quinlan (2-for-3) smacked a two-run single in a seventh inning three-run rally, but the Golden Hawks (9-4, 4-3 Bi-County West) fell short in Hadley, Saturday.

Izzy Palmisano was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Gabby Palmisano added a hit.

Baseball

Frontier Regional 6, Northbridge 1 — Five solid innings from Kalen Evans, mixed with a balanced offensive effort guided the Red Hawks, Saturday in South Deerfield.

The Red Hawks (13-3) jumped ahead early, scoring a pair in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Kiernan Freeman and Corbin Blight walked, and both came around on a Jacob Bryant triple.

Bryant finished with three RBIs, while Freeman (RBI) had two hits, including a double.

Garrett DeForest tripled for Frontier, which received RBIs from Matt Hildreth and Kyle Barnes.

Evans struck out eight and walked a pair in five innings, allowing just a single run in the top of the fourth. Xavier Santiago shut the door over the final two innings, striking out five and not issuing a walk.

Hopkins Academy 10, Belchertown 9 — The Golden Hawks (10-5) led 7-4 after two innings and 10-8 after the fifth, and held on in Hadley, Saturday.

Andrew Ciaglo pitched 6⅔ innings of relief for the win.

Noah Scanlon-Dean (double) was 4-for-4 with three RBIs, while Braedyn Tudryn (hit by pitch) was 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs.

Aidan Michalak (run, walk) finished 2-for-3.

Jack Mankowsky (hit) scored twice and walked twice to pace Belchertown.

Chris Tilton (two, double) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Boys lacrosse

Northampton 9, Amherst Regional 6 — Connor Tobin scored three goals, while Yano Porter added two as the Blue Devils (6-7) beat their rivals, Saturday in Amherst.

Ben Gomes-Rapoza (assist), Chance Asbornsen (assist), Jay Mahoney and Jake Delisle each had one goal. Jonathan Marshall made eight saves in the win.

Pierre Tilus had three goals, while Dom MacDonald, Will Borrell and Tyler Borrell had one each for Amherst (4-9).

Sam Leonard had an assist and Liam Johnson made 11 saves in defeat.

Girls lacrosse

Chicopee Comp 10, Northampton 3 — Shea Crowther, Jett DuVal and Ellie Mahoney each scored for the Blue Devils (2-16), Saturday in Chicopee.

Lee 16, St. Mary’s 3 — Sam Moran, Skylar Duda and Summer Duda each scored for the Saints (1-14), Saturday.

April Warner made 11 saves.

It was the first varsity goal for seventh grader Summer Duda.
