High schools: Cody Lambert scores 4 goals as Belchertown skates past Southwick in opener

The Belchertown hockey team netted four goals in the second period to take command and beat Southwick, 9-2, in its season-opener, Saturday at the Mullins Center Practice Rink.

Cody Lambert (assist) finished with four goals, while Vaughn Gillen added two. AJ Velez, Brandon Conroy and Brian Pendrick each scored once.

Matt Pacheco had two assists and Andrew Mugford one for the Orioles.

Ethan Rajpold stopped 17 shots in 35 minutes. Jacob Delaney made five saves in the final 10 minutes.

Amherst Regional 4, Easthampton 3 — Jayden Blackburn (assist) scored twice, while Chris Foster and Evan Smith added a goal apiece as the Hurricanes opened the season with a win over the defending Western Massachusetts Division 3A champions at Orr Rink, Saturday.

Nick Foster and Nick Paul each had one assist, while John Hanscom earned the win in net.

Garren Fugiel had a goal and an assist, while Christopher Tenscar and Jake Delisle scored for the Eagles (0-1).

John Zatowski and Jake Batchelder each had one assist. Tyler Cortis took the loss in goal.

South Hadley 3, Chicopee Comp 1 — Mike Mazza and Joe Cigal each had a goal and an assist as the Tigers (1-0) won their opener, Saturday at Fitzpatrick Ice Arena.

Matthew Brunelle scored once, while Ben Watkins, Will Ortyl and Luke Hunter each had one assist.

Anthony Cigal made 18 saves in the win.

Greenfield 7, Chicopee 5 — Bryan Baumann (three assists) scored three goals, while Doug Hanieski (three assists), Sean O’Sullivan (assist), Aidan Roache and Mike McGoldrick each had one goal as the Green Wave (1-0) won, Saturday at Collins-Moylan Arena.

Riley Drew made 30 saves.

Boys basketball

Drury 73, Hopkins Academy 45 — Nate Waldon had 15 points, while Andrew Ciaglo and Caleb Graves each had eight, but the Golden Hawks (0-1) fell at the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off, Saturday at UMass’ Curry Hicks Cage.

Granby 45, South Hadley 29 — Kyle Murdock and Brandon Wishart each had 13 points as the Rams (1-0) beat the Tigers (0-2) at the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off, Saturday at UMass’ Curry Hicks Cage.

Hunter Borowski had 13 points and Hunter Carey added 12 for South Hadley.

Palmer 63, Belchertown 54 — Jordan Lanoue scored a game-high 18 points and Corey Lanoue added 14, but the Orioles (1-1) fell at the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off, Saturday at UMass’ Curry Hicks Cage.
