South Hadley made the 118-mile drive to Old Colony Regional in Rochester and back twice in two days to finish an MIAA Division 4 boys lacrosse state tournament Round of 32 game.

The No. 17 Tigers made sure every mile was worth it. They took down the No. 16 Cougars 17-4 on Wednesday after beginning the game Tuesday night. 

Lightning delayed the game at halftime when South Hadley led 6-1.

“We jumped on them right away and got a lead,” South Hadley coach Jeff Marion said. “We came out strong again (Wednesday). The kids were fired up we had to go back out there.”

South Hadley’s Ethan Roy led the way with five goals and two assists. Charlie Anischik contributed two goals and three assists for the Tigers, while Owen Dawson added four assists.

Avery Haber, Chase Mathers (assist) and Sly Curto scored twice each for South Hadley, while Jack Sullivan found the net once.

South Hadley goalie Bennett Allen turned away 17 shots.

“We are at full strength with our team, which is really great, we haven’t been most of the season,” Marion said.

South Hadley (6-13) has another long drive ahead of it when it heads to No. 1 Cohassett (115 miles) at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Baseball

Smith Voc 11, Pathfinder 1 - The Vikings lived up to their No. 1 ranking in the State Vocational small school tournament semifinal against No. 4 Pathfinder. 

The Smith Voc offense came alive in the fifth inning, scoring eight of its 11 runs in the fifth to run-rule Pathfinder. They’ll play for the title on Friday at Arcanum Field at 4 pm. 

Tyler Carson threw all five innings on the mound, striking out six and allowing just three hits. 

Carson also had two hits and two runs, including a double, and Cayden Payne drilled a triple and scored once. Marshall Ingram had a double and two runs, Caelan Finnie had a double and a run, and James Lavallee finished with one hit and one run. 

Track & field 

Several local teams participated in the MSTCA West Heptathlon/Decathlon meet at Frontier Regional in South Deerfield to conclude the spring outdoor track season this week. 

South Hadley’s Emma Sanford won the individual heptathlon title with a score of 4,413 points and the Frontier girls team of Caroline Crocker (second), Nicole Plasse (10th) and Abigail Howard (15th) combined to finish second overall as a team. 

Sanford won the 100 hurdles (15.07), long jump (5.27 meters), shot put (10.35 meters) and javelin (28.57 meters). 

The Northampton girls trio of Camilla Brewer (T-third), Kira French (seventh) and Alya Mourad (27th) combined for third place as a group. 

On the boys’ side, Northampton’s Davis Wheat placed highest individually in the decathlon with a fourth-place finish (4,802), just ahead of Frontier’s Erich Brown in fifth (4,783). 

Luke Howard won the 1,500 run with a time of 4:25.09; he placed 19th overall with 3,772 points. 

Youth baseball

Amherst 21, Wilbraham 3 - Henry Drinker drilled two doubles and two singles and finished with six RBIs for Amherst in a win for Amherst in the Suburban Koufax division. 

Oscar Reich got the start for Amherst, throwing a no-hitter in three innings and striking out six. Max Lashway threw three innings in relief and struck out eight, while Graham Van Giessen closed out the seventh, allowing one run. 

Amherst Orioles 11, Amherst Royals 4 – Jonah Sommers held the Royals scoreless over the first two innings and Gus Garrett Peltier earned the long save allowing one run over the final three innings.

Garrett Peltier helped the cause with two doubles. Julian Park was 2-for-2 with two runs scored, Kaelen Worgess and Sandu Rager tripled and Rager made two warning track catches of deep flies to center. 

For the Royals, Emmett Owens, Gray Bovaird and Jack Bajnoci had hits and the runs were scored by Bovaird, Owens, Ian Kim and William Rathbun.
